Jimmie Johnson sounds off about Kurt Busch—again
By Reid Spencer Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service WATKINS GLEN, N.Y.—Jimmie Johnson isn’t ready to let his feud with Kurt Busch die. In a spirited media session Friday at Watkins Glen International, Johnson, in essence, impugned Busch’s manhood for the way the driver of the No. 22 handled the postrace confrontation between the drivers last week on pit road at Pocono What started as an animated conversation between the combatants, who traded shots on the final lap of last … Read entire article »

Gordon Has a Full Race Cushion Going into Watkins Glen
WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. – Including this Sunday’s Heluva Good! Sour Cream Dips at the Glen, only five races remain before the 12-driver “Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup” field is set. For Jeff Gordon at this point of the season, who is “following” him may be more critical than who is ahead. Halfway to the “Chase” after race No. 13 at Kansas Speedway in June, Gordon was 13th in the point standings and 121 markers out … Read entire article »

Not All Road Courses Are Created Equal
HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. – The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series’ two annual visits to road courses may look similar to some casual fans, but to Kyle Busch, driver of the No. 18 M&M’s Toyota for Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR), there’s a stark contrast from Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, Calif. and Watkins Glen (N.Y.) International, site of Sunday’s Helluva Good! Sour Cream Dips at The Glen. So much so that Busch describes … Read entire article »

Tony Stewart wants Cup Series to race on Watkins Glen’s boot
By Reid Spencer Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service WATKINS GLEN, N.Y.—Before Tuesday’s ride swap with Lewis Hamilton, there was a section of the Watkins Glen International road course Stewart had never seen, the .95-mile boot-shaped section called—you guessed it—the “boot.” After racing on it in both a Sprint Cup and a Formula One car, Stewart would like to see NASCAR incorporate the boot into its August Cup race here. “I enjoyed the long course,” Stewart said. “I’d never been around it till today. I told (NASCAR executive and pace car driver) Brett Bodine when we got out of the car after our setup runs that I would like the opportunity to see us having a shot at running the long course. “I think it would create more passing opportunities, for sure, and it’s just such … Read entire article »

Ride swap gives Hamilton, Stewart a welcome break
By Reid Spencer Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service WATKINS GLEN, N.Y.—Lewis Hamilton and Tony Stewart got a welcome respite from the serious business of auto racing by doing what they love—minus the pressure they feel on the weekends. Hamilton, the 2008 Formula One champion, and Stewart, twice a NASCAR Sprint Cup champion, each got a taste of the other’s milieu Tuesday at Watkins Glen International. After Hamilton completed five laps in a Stewart-Haas Cup car, Stewart took a turn in the McLaren Mercedes MP4-23 Hamilton drove to the 2008 world championship. It was a rainy, blustery day at the Glen. The track was wet when Stewart and Hamilton ran some baseline laps in their own cars—both on rain tires—but by the time Hamilton began his run in the stock car, the track had begun … Read entire article »

Ambrose makes it 3 straight at the Glen
WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. – Marcos Ambrose didn’t drive like a man in limbo. Though his future is uncertain, with his announced departure from JTG/Daugherty Racing for parts—or team—unknown, Ambrose drove immaculately Saturday afternoon in picking up his third straight NASCAR Nationwide Series victory at Watkins Glen International, winning the Zippo 200 from the pole. During a 16-lap run to the finish, Ambrose pulled away to win by 2.834 seconds over Joey Logano, who, for once, was happy to settle for second place. … Read entire article »

Edwards streaks to first Cup pole since ’08
WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. – Carl Edwards wrote the next chapter in the resurgence of Roush Fenway Racing in indelible ink—not just by winning the pole for Sunday’s Heluva Good! Sour Cream Dips at The Glen but by blowing away the rest of the NASCAR Sprint Cup field in the process. Edwards sped around the 2.45-mile road course at Watkins Glen International in 70.882 seconds (124.432 mph), just .084 seconds off Jeff Gordon’s 2003 track record. Jamie McMurray was second in Saturday’s qualifying session at 123.814 mph, followed by his Earnhardt Ganassi Racing teammate, Juan Pablo Montoya, at 123.699 mph. … Read entire article »

The Glen A Crucial Stop In ‘Race To The Chase’
Five down, five to go in the “Race to the Chase.” And plots continue thickening. Sunday’s Heluva Good! Sour Cream Dips at The Glen could prove to be the racing equivalent of a blender — 90 laps on the historic road course at Watkins Glen International. The 2.45-mile layout in New York’s Finger Lakes region is tough to conquer regardless of “Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup” implications. But consider the stakes: Sunday’s winner either boosts his Chase standing, or revels in a career accomplishment. … Read entire article »

Busch And Ambrose Can Make Three Wins The Charm
Kyle Busch and Marcos Ambrose are both looking for a trifecta of sorts at Watkins Glen International in the Zippo 200 on Saturday, Aug. 7. Busch is on a record setting pace yet again. In 2008 he tied Sam Ard’s NASCAR Nationwide single season wins record of 10 victories. This season, Busch has made 17 starts, posting nine wins, 13 top fives, 14 top 10s and two poles. This season, he has won half (52%) of his starts. He also has mounted three perfect Driver Ratings (150.0) this year at Iowa, Texas and Dover. … Read entire article »
