Chris Showalter’s iron-man streak hits 400 races

By Reid Spencer Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service KANSAS CITY, Kan. — On Saturday at Kansas Speedway, NASCAR’s Camping World Truck Series will run its 400th race. Chris Showalter, truck chief for Travis Kvapil at Randy Moss Motorsports, has been there for every single one. Sixteen years ago, Showalter attended his first truck race — the series debut at Phoenix on Feb. 5, 1995 — as a shock specialist for Liberty Racing, which fielded trucks for Butch Miller. All told, Showalter has worked for six teams, in capacities that include spotter, truck chief and crew chief. In 2002, as truck chief, he was part of Mike Bliss’ championship team. A year later, he won a second straight truck series title as crew chief for Kvapil, who then was driving for owner Steve Coulter. Showalter, whose father, … Read entire article »

Kvapil Focuses on the Finish Line

Statesville, N.C. – Travis Kvapil and the No. 38 Long John Silver’s team did some experimenting in last weekend’s Showdown at Charlotte (N.C.) Motor Speedway, and now they’re ready to apply lessons learned in Sunday’s Coca-Cola 600 at the 1.5-mile oval. The 600-mile race is the longest of the year in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, and the team knows they have to successfully adapt to the day-to-night conditions to be there at the end of the marathon event. The race is in stark contrast to last week’s Showdown, a 40-lap, non-points event in which Kvapil finished 16th. But the team can apply knowledge learned throughout the Showdown weekend to their race approach this Sunday. Kvapil has eight previous career starts at Charlotte, with a high finish of 17th. Statesville, N.C. -Travis Kvapil heads to Dover (Del.) International Speedway with momentum from having a fast car and a solid run at Darlington (S.C.) Raceway. Look for the Long John Silver’s Ford to carry the “Autism Speaks” puzzle-piece decal in support of the weekend’s autism awareness efforts. Kvapil has eight career starts at the one-mile, high-banked oval. His best career finish at the track dubbed the “Monster Mile” is 11th (2008). Kvapil Loves Tough-to-Tame Darlington

Statesville, N.C. – For a track that tends to chew drivers up and spit them out, Darlington (S.C.) Raceway is strangely a favorite of Travis Kvapil’s. So despite the demands of the track they call “Too Tough to Tame,” the driver of the No. 38 Long John Silver’s Ford always looks forward to racing at the historic 1.366-mile oval. The team has the opportunity to qualify for Saturday night’s Showtime Southern 500 on speed, but will have to attack the tough track with the right set-up for the unique, egg-shaped turns. Kvapil has four career Cup starts at Darlington, with a top finish of eighth (2008). Comments from Long John Silver’s driver Travis Kvapil on Darlington: “Darlington is one of my favorite racetracks we go to. It’s different from any … Read entire article »

Kvapil Ready to Make a Point at Talladega

Statesville, N.C. – Travis Kvapil and the No. 38 Long John Silver’s team head to Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway this weekend ready to make a point – and gain some points. After failing to qualify for last weekend’s race at Texas Motor Speedway, the team is eager to put that miss behind them and get back to business at Sunday’s Aaron’s 499. TMone returns as an associate sponsor on the No. 38 Fusion, which will hit the super-fast track with the benefit of Ford’s FR9 engine under the hood. Despite NASCAR’s restrictor-plate change for the race – shrinking the holes and sapping horsepower – the team expects to see the usual high-speed, draft-driven racing the track is known for. Kvapil has six previous starts on the 2.66-mile speedway, including one on … Read entire article »

The team’s FR9 motors from Roush-Yates Racing Engines will provide more horsepower than the team has had on previous visits to the fast track. Kvapil has nine Sprint Cup career starts at Texas. Kvapil Gets Veteran Crew Chief Jay Guy for Fontana

Statesville, N.C. – Travis Kvapil heads to the West Coast this week with confidence his Long John Silver’s Ford will be stronger at Auto Club Speedway this season. He’ll also go with a new crew chief, with Jay Guy coming on board to lead the No. 38 team. Guy is a veteran in the NASCAR garage, having worked with teams such as Penske Racing, Furniture Row Racing, Wood Brothers and others. In addition to a new leader on the pit box, the team’s upgraded cars and motors should translate to an improved performance on the two-mile, low-banked track, where Kvapil earned two top-30 finishes last season. Sunday’s Auto Club 400 will be his ninth career Sprint Cup start at Auto Club Speedway. His best finish at … Read entire article »

Kvapil Marks Milestone at Bristol

Statesville, N.C. – NASCAR driver Travis Kvapil will celebrate a milestone in his Sprint Cup Series career this weekend at Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway – but he’ll look a little different doing it. The veteran driver will make his 150th Cup start at Sunday’s Jeff Byrd 500 at the famed short track, and he’ll do so with a new-look paint scheme on his No. 38 Long John Silver’s Ford. The new design showcases the new Long John Silver’s logo, colors and tagline and replaces the familiar bright yellow-and-blue scheme that has adorned the car in recent years. Bristol is a good place for Kvapil to celebrate his achievement. Like many drivers, he includes the .533-mile oval among his favorites and has run well there in the past. His best … Read entire article »
