Texas a great spot for Bodine to notch elusive first win of season

Texas a great spot for Bodine to notch elusive first win of season

By Jared Turner Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service Reigning NASCAR Camping World Truck Series champion Todd Bodine doesn’t know if he’ll return to Germain Racing next season. Bodine does know that wherever he lands for 2012, he won’t be happy with another season like 2011. With just two races left on the 25-race schedule, it’s quite plausible that the two-time truck series champion will fail to reach victory lane just one season after collecting four wins in a runaway … Read entire article »

Hornaday wins at Texas when Sauter is black-flagged

By John Sturbin / Special to Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service FORT WORTH, Texas—Ron Hornaday Jr. won the Camping World Truck Series WinStar World Casino 400k Friday night when race leader Johnny Sauter was black-flagged for changing lanes on the night’s final restart. Sauter, who had passed Hornaday for the lead with an outside move on Lap 130, was penalized for moving from the outside lane in front of Hornaday before crossing the start/finish line on a green-white-checkered restart on Lap 166. The race went 168 laps, one beyond its scheduled distance. “He’s got a lane to race down there,” Sauter said as he walked to his hauler. “We both spun the tires.” Asked if he would confront NASCAR officials after his gaffe, Sauter said, “It’s official, isn’t it?” Hornaday, a four-time series champion, earned … Read entire article »

Sauter could pad his points lead at Texas

By Jared Turner Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service Johnny Sauter recently looked over the next several races on the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series schedule and came to an encouraging conclusion. It’s the kind of supposition a driver can only reach when he’s having a year like that being enjoyed by Sauter, who sits atop the series standings heading into Friday night’s WinStar World Casino 400k at Texas Motor Speedway. “I just looked at the schedule (Monday) morning actually and looked at the next five or six races and I’m like, ‘Damn. We’ve got a good shot to win all these races,’” Sauter said. Conventional wisdom indeed holds that—based on his season to date, which features a win and six top-10 finishes—Sauter is a threat just about everywhere the truck series goes these days. That’s bad … Read entire article »

Edwards vs. Bowyer? It’s just banter

By Reid Spencer Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service There was nothing nasty about about the postrace news conference with Clint Bowyer and Carl Edwards—despite appearances to the contrary. After Bowyer finished second in Saturday night’s Samsung Mobile 500 and Edwards ran third, the drivers spent as much time needling each other as they did fielding questions from reporters. The drivers sat at the dais in the Texas Motor Speedway media center, separated by an empty chair, and traded barbs. To the uninitiated, it must have been borderline bizarre. But to Edwards and Bowyer, it was just another day at the racetrack. Off the asphalt, they’re close friends, and they seldom miss an opportunity to play up their Kansas-Missouri rivalry. Bowyer grew up in Emporia, Kan., Edwards in Columbia, Mo. Nevertheless, it certainly sounded as if Bowyer … Read entire article »

Kenseth dominates Texas to snap losing streak

By Reid Spencer Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service FORT WORTH, Texas —After a 76-race absence from victory lane, Matt Kenseth needed a quick refresher course. “Show me where to park this thing,” Kenseth radioed to crew chief Jimmy Fennig after beating race runner-up Clint Bowyer to the checkered flag by a whopping 8.315 seconds in Saturday night’s Samsung Mobile 500 at Texas Motor Speedway. “It’s been a while.” That it had. Kenseth’s Sprint Cup Series winless streak dated to February 2009, when he won the Daytona 500 and the second race of the season at Fontana, Calif.—and nothing after that. The victory was Kenseth’s second at Texas and the 19th of his Cup career. Kenseth’s Roush Fenway Racing teammates Carl Edwards and Greg Biffle came home third and fourth, respectively, with Paul Menard completing the … Read entire article »

Elliott Sadler Overcomes Loose Conditions to Score Third Consecutive Top-Five Finish

FORT WORTH, Texas - Elliott Sadler scored his third consecutive top-five finish of 2011 in the O’Reilly Auto Parts 300 at Texas Motor Speedway Friday night. After fighting with a very loose-handling racecar for more than half of the 300 mile race, Sadler and the No. 2 OneMain Financial team improved the handling of the car, rallying to finish fifth and move up to fourth in the NASCAR Nationwide Series Driver’s Point Standings. After taking the green flag from the third position, Sadler immediately relayed to crew chief Ernie Cope that the No. 2 Chevrolet Impala was turning way too loosely. The race progressed without a caution for over 50 laps, so Sadler remained on track, slipping back to the fifth … Read entire article »

Mid-Race Accident Ends Busch’s Bid for Victory

All good things must come to an end, and for Kyle Busch and the No. 18 Z-Line Designs-sponsored team of Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR), their incredible run of success in NASCAR Nationwide Series competition at Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth came to an end with a severely damaged racecar being loaded into their transporter just past the halfway point of Friday night’s O’Reilly Auto Parts 300. Busch finished a disappointing 34th after being involved in an accident in turn two on lap 88. It marked just the second time in 13 Nationwide Series starts at Texas that Busch finished outside the top-seven. He won five consecutive races at the 1.5-mile oval between April 2008 and April 2010 and bookended that … Read entire article »
