By Reid Spencer Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service LOUDON, N.H.—Ryan Newman and Tony Stewart started 1-2 in Sunday’s Lenox Industrial Tools 301 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, and not even a fuel crisis, a wild jumble of divergent strategies or a crew chief with pneumonia could prevent them from finishing that way. “One hell of a day, boys—one hell of a day,” Stewart radioed to his team as he approached the finish line .773 seconds behind his Stewart-Haas … Read entire article »

NASCAR Notebook: Stewart: We had to change direction

By Reid Spencer Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service LONG POND, Pa.—Tony Stewart felt he had to make a move. That’s why the co-owner of Stewart-Haas Racing released Bobby Hutchens from his job as competition director for the organization, in a move announced Monday. “We just feel like we’re not headed in the direction we want,” Stewart told reporters Friday at Pocono Raceway. “We’ve got to make a change in that direction. I can promise you, it’s one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever had to make in my life. “I think the world of Bobby. Stewart-Haas Racing: Goody’s Fast Relief 500 Race Report

Ryan Newman, driver of the No. 39 Haas Automation Chevrolet Impala, led the two-car Stewart-Haas Racing (SHR) contingent at Martinsville (Va.) Speedway by finishing 20th in Sunday’s Goody’s Fast Relief 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race. Newman led twice for three laps but was undone by a broken header pipe that sapped his car’s horsepower and a flat left-rear tire that sent him for a spin off turn three on lap 372. Together, the misfortune conspired to put Newman two laps down. Tony Stewart, driver of the No. 14 Office Depot/Mobil 1 Chevrolet Impala for SHR, fared even worse. He finished 38 laps down in 34th. A broken rear-end gear sent him to the garage area in the waning laps, but the team was able to replace the gear, allowing Stewart to … Read entire article »

Newman off to best start since rookie season

By Jim Pedley Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service Ryan Newman nervously circumvented the subject of his contract situation earlier this year. He said he was not sure if he was in the final year of his deal and chuckled that team-owner Tony Stewart would take him to Burger King when it was time to talk contract. If Stewart extends an invitation to dine before this weekend’s Goody’s Fast Relief 500 Sprint Cup race, Newman can probably look forward to having his Whopper without a side order of angst. Newman, 33, is off to his best start to a season since his rookie year of 2002 and, more important in terms of lunch with the boss, by far the best start in his two-plus seasons with Stewart-Haas Racing. “It’s been a really great start for our … Read entire article »
