Matt Kenseth Friday All-Star Race Media Visit
Matt Kenseth is coming off his second win of the season after taking the checkered flag in last week’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Dover. Kenseth spoke about the weekend ahead before Friday’s practice for the Sprint All-Star Race. AFTER LAST WEEK’S WIN DO YOU FEEL YOU HAVE SOME SECURITY NOW AS FAR AS MAKING THE CHASE? “I guess there’s maybe a little more security, but it’s still really early and there’s a lot of racing to do. I don’t think two wins is going to guarantee a spot in the chase, so certainly there’s a lot of racing to do. We want to work our way up in the points a little farther. For three weeks in between Texas and Dover we didn’t have very good results, so we … Read entire article »

Full Transcript: WHERE DO YOUR ALL-STAR RACE WINS RANK IN YOUR MIND WITH ALL OF YOUR WINS? “They are definitely big. The way I look at big races is if you are fortunate enough to win one, the only way to truly appreciate it is to see where it came in your career. If it came early in your career and then you’ve had time to go and run in that race and see how challenging it is and learn the history about it and struggle at trying to win it again, then you appreciate it a lot. HOW DO YOU LIKE … Read entire article »

All-Star Race can tear a family apart — just ask the Busches
By Jim Pedley Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service Darrell Waltrip’s love for the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race did not come at first sight. In fact, when he heard of the plan to have the first one back in 1985, he wasn’t even sure he wanted to participate. A racing purist, he wasn’t interested in putting on “shows.” Twenty-six years later, very few view the annual event at Charlotte Motor Speedway as a gimmick or a soulless exhibition. On the contrary, the image of the All-Star Race—the 2011 edition of which is scheduled for Saturday night—is of a throwback, everything-goes, under-the-lights trophy dash for cash. So intense has the competition become for the trophy and prize money—which is now over a $1 million—that brother has actually turned against brother in pursuit of them. Like in 2007. NASCAR Notebook: Sprint Showdown could be as competitive as main event
The format of Saturday’s Sprint All-Star Race alone—a 100-lap race with a 10-lap dash to the finish—all but guarantees the sort of intensity we’ve come to expect from the non-points race for a $1 million top prize. With one of the most potent fields in its history, the Sprint Showdown, the qualifying race that precedes the All-Star Race and sends two drivers on to the main event, could be every bit as interesting. Topping the list of Showdown competitors is Dale Earnhardt Jr., who is not guaranteed a spot in the All-Star Race under current eligibility rules. Earnhardt won the All-Star Race in 2000 but is beyond the 10-year window for past race winners. Likewise, 2000 Sprint Cup champion Bobby Labonte has aged out of … Read entire article »
