DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - In a special season during which magic moments were many, Tony Stewart’s championship-clinching victory at Homestead-Miami Speedway has been voted the Top Moment of 2011. Members of NASCARMedia.com voted in the week-long poll, casting ballots for the top-10 moments from the just-completed NASCAR season. Stewart’s walk-off win in the season finale, however, didn’t exactly prevail in a landslide among voting by members of the news media. Trevor Bayne’s historic Daytona 500 victory – … Read entire article »

NASCAR Notebook: Earnhardt determined to win Showdown
By Reid Spencer and Matt Crossman Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service CONCORD, N.C.—Dale Earnhardt Jr. is promising an all-out assault on Saturday’s Sprint Showdown. Earnhardt couldn’t be blamed for taking a conservative approach to the qualifying race, which will transfer the top two finishers into the main event that follows, the Sprint All-Star Race. Realistically, all he has to do is have a car in raceable condition to take advantage of the fan vote, which fills the last position in the All-Star Race. “The opportunity for us to win the fan vote is definitely in the back of my mind, but I don’t think it will affect me at all in how I drive the race,” Earnhardt told Sporting News on Friday at Charlotte Motor Speedway. “If … Read entire article »

Regan Smith replacing Bayne in burnout derby
By Staff report Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service Regan Smith will replace Trevor Bayne in Saturday’s Pennzoil Ultra Victory Challenge, a contest rating participants’ best burnouts. Joining Smith in the competition are defending champion Joey Logano, Clint Bowyer, Kyle Busch, Kurt Busch, Kasey Kahne and Brad Keselowski. Bayne also was pulled from competing in Saturday’s Sprint All-Star Race and the Nationwide Series race at Iowa on Sunday because of ongoing health issues. Since early April, Bayne, 20, has been treated for nausea, swelling, numbness and impaired vision. The cause of his medical issues was thought to be an insect, tick or spider bite, but doctors at the Mayo Clinic, where Bayne underwent exhaustive tests late last month, have not announced a diagnosis. The winner gets $10,000 to donate to his favorite charity. … Read entire article »

Euphoria of Smith’s win aside, NASCAR has much to ponder
By Reid Spencer Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service DARLINGTON, S.C.—In the afterglow of Regan Smith’s feel-good victory at Darlington, NASCAR has a lot of nastiness to discuss. For the record, Smith, who drives for Colorado-based Furniture Row Racing, pulled off a feat most had considered impossible with two laps left in Saturday night’s Showtime Southern 500. On old tires, he held off Carl Edwards, one of the hardest chargers in NASCAR racing, to record his first Sprint Cup victory. Smith is the fifth driver for a single-car team to win a Cup race since 2000, but he’s the second this year. Trevor Bayne was the surprise winner of the Daytona 500 in his second start in the series, but Smith’s victory may be every bit as popular. It also represents the meting out of cosmic … Read entire article »

Regan Smith pulls off upset at Darlington
By Reid Spencer Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service DARLINGTON, S.C.—Nearly three years after a NASCAR ruling denied him his first Sprint Cup victory, Regan Smith finally got the elusive win. After staying out on old tires, Smith held off Carl Edwards to win Saturday night’s Showtime Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway in a dramatic green-white-checkered-flag finish. Smith crossed the finish line 0.196 seconds ahead of runner-up Edwards. Moments later, tempers flared between drivers Kyle Busch and Kevin Harvick and their crews in the aftermath of a wild wreck that brought out the final caution of the race. “This is the Southern 500—we’re not supposed to win this thing,” an incredulous Smith radioed to his crew after the race. Brad Keselowski, also on old tires, finished third, with polesitter Kasey Kahne running fourth and Ryan Newman fifth. The … Read entire article »
