NASCAR Notebook: Stewart promises swift, irreparable damage to blockers

By Reid Spencer Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.—In football, blocking is an important fundamental. In racing, Tony Stewart thinks the practice is just fundamentally wrong—and he’s prepared to say so with his bumper. Stewart believed Brian Vickers was blocking him last Sunday at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, Calif. To show his displeasure, Stewart sent Vickers spinning in Turn 11 and ignited a seven-car wreck. Later in the race, Vickers retaliated by knocking Stewart on top of the tire barrier in the same corner. Stewart finished 39th and dropped to 12th in the Sprint Cup standings, but that won’t deter him from taking action against blockers in the future. … Read entire article »

Unassuming Whitt already making strides in truck series

By Jared Turner Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service To hear Cole Whitt tell it, he’s just a simple guy. So simple, in fact, that his time during the week consists largely of hanging out at his team’s race shop and tinkering with his own diesel truck. The 19-year-old also isn’t one to gloat about his accomplishments—which include a USAC National Midget championship in 2008 and two USAC Silver Crown wins in ’09—and he more or less likes to take life at a slow pace when he’s not racing. Perhaps it is Whitt’s low-key personality that makes the rookie hardly a household name yet in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series. It’s all good with him, though. He’s been making plenty of noise this season on the track. In just five starts this year in NASCAR’s No. 3 … Read entire article »

Scott Speed released by Red Bull Racing

Red Bull Racing has released Scott Speed, driver of the organization’s No. 82 Toyota, according to a statement provided by the team. Speed, 27, has competed full time for the group in NASCAR’s Sprint Cup Series since 2009. He finished 30th in the standings in 2010 after a 35th-place in points in ’09. “We have exercised our rights to end the relationship at the end of 2010,” officials said. “We wish Scott the best of luck in his career.” Speed, who competed in Formula One before moving to NASCAR, had two top 10s this season—finishing 10th at Atlanta in the spring and 10th at Daytona in July. The move paves the way for the addition of Kasey Kahne to the organization. Kahne drove the final five races in the team’s No. 83 entry while … Read entire article »

Kahne Canned by Richard Petty Motorsports

By Reid Spencer Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service Kasey Kahne has been released from his driving duties at Richard Petty Motorsports, effective immediately, the team announced Wednesday night. Almirola had been slated to drive the No. 83 Toyota for Red Bull Racing, but it now appears likely that Kahne will make his debut with Red Bull earlier than planned, if details can be worked out in time for this weekend’s Tums Fast Relief 500 at the .526-mile short track. In April, Kahne had announced he was leaving RPM at the end of the 2010 season and had signed with Hendrick Motorsports to drive the No. 5 Chevrolet in 2012 and beyond.
