Gordon Wants Michigan to be the Start of Something Better

Gordon Wants Michigan to be the Start of Something Better

BROOKLYN, Mich. – Points are awarded at the end of NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races, but Jeff Gordon and Team DuPont believe that process begins much earlier. Like, on Friday. Through 22 races in 2011, the 84-time winner has one pole (Talladega) but an average starting position of 14.5. That average is the lowest of his 19 full seasons on the circuit, but it is something Gordon and the team are working hard to correct before the … Read entire article »

Hamlin breaks through with win at Michigan

By Reid Spencer Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service BROOKLYN, Mich.—For the first time this season—at a track where he was expected to contend—Denny Hamlin finally dodged the pitfalls that have plagued him in previous races and closed the deal. Hamlin, who won his 17th Sprint Cup race, crossed the finish line .281 seconds ahead of Kenseth. Edwards wins Michigan Nationwide race with late surge

By Reid Spencer Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service BROOKLYN, Mich.—When Carl Edwards saw the Ford of Roush Fenway Racing teammate Ricky Stenhouse Jr. blow by him with 21 laps left in Saturday’s Alliance Truck Parts 250 at Michigan International Speedway, he was worried. Just as crew chief Mike Beam predicted he would, however, Edwards caught Stenhouse in the closing laps, passed his teammate on Lap 117 of 125 and pulled away to win his fourth NASCAR Nationwide Series race of the season and the 33rd of his career. “Ricky drove his heart out—that guy is unbelievable,” Edwards said in victory lane. “I didn’t think I was going to be able to get him, but it was like his car got tightened up. Man, he did a good job. … I thought Ricky was setting … Read entire article »

Kurt Busch extends pole streak to three at Michigan

By Reid Spencer Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service BROOKLYN, Mich.—Kurt Busch broke his routine at Michigan International Speedway—but it didn’t matter. Even without a spin during Friday’s practice, Busch won his third straight Sprint Cup pole during Saturday’s time trials at the two-mile track. Completing his first lap in 38.156 seconds (188.699 mph), Busch won the pole for Sunday’s Heluva Good 400. In his previous two pole-winning efforts—at Kansas and Pocono—Busch had spun during Friday’s practice before claiming the top starting spot on Saturday. “This is the first time we’ve had a pole without spinning or wrecking our primary car,” Busch said. “This was a conventional weekend, so to speak.” The Coors Light pole award was the 15th of Busch’s career. It was also the fourth straight pole for Penske Racing; Brad Keselowski started the streak … Read entire article »
