Mark Martin leads Hendrick assault in Talladega qualifying

TALLADEGA, Ala.—If Sunday’s Good Sam Club 500 at Talladega Superspeedway goes the same way Saturday’s qualifying session did, Rick Hendrick should have an excellent chance to pick up his 200th Sprint Cup victory. Mark Martin paced four Hendrick cars in the top six starting spots, posting a lap of 181.367 mph (52.799 seconds) to win the pole for the sixth race in the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup. Mark Martin Wins 50th NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Coors Light Pole

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – In winning the Coors Light Pole Award at Daytona International Speedway, Mark Martin became the eighth driver with 50 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series poles. With a speed of 182.065 mph (49.433 seconds), Martin won his third Daytona pole, and joined an exclusive list that features some of the sport’s all-time greats. Martin won seven poles in 2009, the largest single-season number of a NASCAR Sprint Cup career that began in 1981. Martin’s 49th pole came last season, for the 2010 Daytona 500, when he became the oldest pole winner in the race’s history at age 51. NASCAR Notebook: Earnhardt determined to win Showdown

By Reid Spencer and Matt Crossman Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service CONCORD, N.C.—Dale Earnhardt Jr. is promising an all-out assault on Saturday’s Sprint Showdown. Earnhardt couldn’t be blamed for taking a conservative approach to the qualifying race, which will transfer the top two finishers into the main event that follows, the Sprint All-Star Race. Realistically, all he has to do is have a car in raceable condition to take advantage of the fan vote, which fills the last position in the All-Star Race. “The opportunity for us to win the fan vote is definitely in the back of my mind, but I don’t think it will affect me at all in how I drive the race,” Earnhardt told Sporting News on Friday at Charlotte Motor Speedway. “If … Read entire article »

Kyle Busch could make Nationwide history at Dover

By Lee Montgomery Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service To most, if not all, observers of NASCAR, Kyle Busch’s claim as the Nationwide Series’ all-time leader in victories is inevitable. Even Mark Martin, the current leader with 49 wins, figures Busch will soon catch, pass and leave him in the dust. But Busch himself doesn’t figure it that way. Maybe that’s one of the reasons why he’s been able to win 48 times in 211 starts in the Nationwide Series. “We’ll see when it happens,” Busch said, before quickly adding, “if it happens. Maybe some of (the media) say it’s inevitable, but to us we just keep working our guts out and making sure we bring good racecars to the racetrack.” No doubt, Busch’s No. 18 Joe Gibbs Racing team will … Read entire article »

Busch beat Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Denny Hamlin to the finish line by 3.677 seconds. Elliott Sadler was third, followed by Nationwide points leader Justin Allgaier and Steve Wallace. “Being within one of Mark’s win record — it’s special,” Busch said. “We’ll see when it happens, if it happens.
