Wild finish goes Sorenson’s way at Road America
By Jim Heine | Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service ELKHART LAKE, Wis. — Reed Sorenson won the Bucyrus 200 Nationwide Series race Saturday at Road America under caution — and under odd circumstances. Justin Allgaier was leading when caution was called on the final lap of the third green-white-checkered-flag attempt on the 4.048-mile road course, but he ran out of gas at the top of Turn 6, allowing Sorenson to assume the lead on the 57th lap of the scheduled 50-lap race. But as the cars continued toward the finish, Ron Fellows zipped past Sorenson and was the first car to reach the pace car, which leads the cars around the track during cautions. Sorenson and Fellows crossed the finish line side by side, and after deliberation, NASCAR ruled Sorenson the winner. Cars … Read entire article »

Justin Allgaier coasts to victory in Nationwide race
JOLIET, Ill. – The final lap of an auto race is usually a blur of speed. Saturday night’s STP 300 was something else. Justin Allgaier coasted across the finish line to win. He ran out of fuel after passing Carl Edwards on Chicagoland Speedway’s backstretch when Edwards ran out of fuel. Both were going about 50 mph when they rolled across the finish line, even as Daytona 500 winner Trevor Bayne was barreling toward them from behind. Bayne finished third. The outcome was almost surreal, given the ferocity of the first 199 laps. Edwards and Elliott Sadler dueled for most of the last 50 laps. First Edwards was in control, then Sadler. Then Edwards, the Sprint Cup points leader, forced the issue and retook the lead with 25 laps remaining. Did that scrap use … Read entire article »

Allgaier hopes to repeat Nationwide win at Bristol with new team
By Lee Montgomery Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service Justin Allgaier didn’t want to be a one-hit wonder. Allgaier lost his ride with powerhouse Penske Racing after last season, and he could’ve headed to career oblivion like so many other young drivers in NASCAR. “I didn’t want to be a guy who left Penske Racing—and that was the end of my career,” Allgaier said. “I didn’t want to run around in 15th every week. I wanted to be the guy who left Penske Racing and came to another team and won more races. I put a lot of pressure on myself to try to do better.” The 24-year-old Allgaier did land on his feet, driving for Turner Motorsports in the NASCAR Nationwide Series for 2011. And while he hasn’t won a race for the former Braun … Read entire article »

Allgaier knows Homestead will be emotional for him
By Lee Montgomery Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service Justin Allgaier already has a solid ride in place for next season, as he’ll join Turner Motorsports for a full NASCAR Nationwide Series season. But that doesn’t mean he’s ready to walk away from Penske Racing just yet, not when Penske gave him a chance in NASCAR and enabled him to win the Raybestos Rookie of the Year award in 2009 and win at Bristol earlier this season. This weekend’s Ford 300 at Homestead-Miami Speedway, the final race of the Nationwide season, will be “really bittersweet” for the young driver. “For me, I’m very appreciative of the opportunity that I’ve had for the last two years, to have a great sponsor like Verizon and a great team behind me,” Allgaier said. “That being said, there’s a lot … Read entire article »
