Former East Carolina University Center Ed Watkins Finds Life On Pit Road A ‘Gas’
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Sept. 26, 2011) — Frustrated doesn’t accurately describe Juan Pablo Montoya’s mood following Coors Light Pole qualifying for Sunday’s Sylvania 300. Circumstances – a late rain shower – left Montoya 31st on the grid knowing that his Earnhardt Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates Chevrolet had been capable of much, much more. Montoya, however, put qualifying behind him and raced his way to a ninth-place finish, the Colombian’s first top 10 since Watkins Glen … Read entire article »

NASCAR slaps Busch, Harvick with penalties
By Reid Spencer Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service Kyle Busch and Kevin Harvick found out Tuesday the limits to NASCAR’s mantra, “Boys, have at it, and have a good time.” The fun stops when it endangers people on pit road. The sanctioning body fined Busch and Harvick $25,000 each and placed the drivers on probation for the next four Sprint Cup points events (Dover, Charlotte, Kansas and Pocono), through June 15. The penalties address a confrontation between the drivers on pit road after the race and not their actions on the racetrack. After a restart on Lap 363, Harvick’s No. 29 Chevrolet and Busch’s No. 18 Toyota made contact several times. Exiting Turn 4, Harvick’s car bounced off Busch’s and into the Chevy of Harvick’s Richard Childress Racing teammate Clint Bowyer, who slammed into the inside … Read entire article »

Montoya-Newman rivalry not over yet
By Reid Spencer Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service DARLINGTON, S.C.—For anyone who believed Ryan Newman and Juan Pablo Montoya might bury the hatchet before Saturday’s Showtime Southern 500, think again. In the aftermath of a pair of on-track incidents during last Saturday’s Crown Royal Presents 400 at Richmond, NASCAR summoned both drivers to a meeting before Sprint Cup practice Friday. To say the drivers failed to see eye-to-eye is an understatement. It was more like fist to face. A FOXSports.com report cited sources saying that an altercation occurred during the meeting. The FOXSports.com story further cites one source as quoting Montoya saying, ‘Newman hits like a girl.’” Asked about the incident during Friday’s Cup time trials, Montoya said, “I’m not going to tell you (expletive). Let’s leave it at that. What happened in the trailer was … Read entire article »

Richmond race filled with drama
By Reid Spencer Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service RICHMOND, Va.—Most of the drama in Saturday night’s Sprint Cup race at Richmond had nothing to do with race winner Kyle Busch. Yes, Busch stretched his fuel mileage to the limit in beating Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Denny Hamlin to the finish line. The way the race played out between the teammates was suspenseful, to be sure, but the real intensity unfolded behind them. Richmond gave us a rivalry to watch next weekend at Darlington, an indelible image from Kurt Busch and an uncharacteristic meltdown from Martin Truex Jr. First, the rivalry. Polesitter Juan Pablo Montoya saw his hopes for his first NASCAR victory on an oval track evaporate when contact from Ryan Newman’s No. 39 Chevrolet knocked Montoya’s No. 42 into the Turn 3 wall on … Read entire article »

Montoya toured three-quarter-mile Richmond International Raceway in 20.989 seconds (128.639 mph) to earn his second Coors Light pole award of the season and edge Regan Smith (128.382) for the top spot in Saturday’s race, the ninth event on the Cup schedule. The front-row starting spot was Smith’s best ever, and it lowered his series-best qualifying average to 7.1. Clint Bowyer qualified third at 128.272 mph, followed by Kasey Kahne (128.150) and Mark Martin (128.053).
