NASCAR Notebook: How will NASCAR handle Gibbs’ oil pan infractions?

By Reid Spencer Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service BROOKLYN, Mich.—Will Joe Gibbs Racing get its second straight points penalty, or will NASCAR issue a slap on the wrist for the unapproved oil pans found on all three Gibbs Sprint Cup cars during opening-day inspection Friday at Michigan International Speedway? On Monday, NASCAR docked Kyle Busch and Joe Gibbs each six driver and owner points, respectively, and fined crew chief Dave Rogers $25,000 when Busch’s third-place car measured too low in the left front during postrace inspection last Sunday at Pocono. On Friday, Cup series director John Darby told the Gibbs teams, which had not submitted the oil pans for approval before mounting them on their engines, to replace the offending oil pans with approved parts before Friday’s first practice. Gibbs teams busted for unapproved parts

By Reid Spencer Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service BROOKLYN, Mich.—Four days after NASCAR penalized Kyle Busch’s race team for a height-stick infraction at Pocono Raceway, Joe Gibbs Racing was back in the doghouse again. During Friday’s opening-day inspection at Michigan International Speedway, NASCAR found unapproved oil pans on all three JGR Toyotas—the No. 11 of Denny Hamlin, the No. 18 of Busch and the No. 20 of Joey Logano. It wasn’t that the oil pans had been deemed illegal, rather that they had never been submitted for NASCAR’s approval. The oil pans on the Gibbs cars were heavier than those typically in use on Cup cars. Though it’s impossible to infer intent from such a violation, lowering the center of gravity on the current Cup car is generally considered desirable. NASCAR required JGR to replace … Read entire article »
