Can RCR recover after eight subpar races?

By Reid Spencer Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service HAMPTON, Ga.—How “off” were the Richard Childress Racing cars at Bristol? In that race and the seven that preceded it, RCR cars had posted only one top-five finish—Paul Menard’s victory in the July 31 Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis … Read entire article »

Struggling drivers see hope in Martinsville

By Reid Spencer Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service Salvation, your name is Martinsville. That’s the fervent hope of a handful of drivers who need strong performances at the .526-mile paper-clip-shaped track to jump-start their seasons. First and foremost is Denny Hamlin, who fell to 21st in the Sprint Cup standings when an engine failure knocked him out of Sunday’s Auto Club 400 after 105 of 200 laps at Fontana, Calif., and relegated him to 39th place. Engine problems have plagued Joe Gibbs Racing all season. Hamlin, Kyle Busch and Joey Logano have experienced in-race failures, and, frankly, Hamlin is worried about it. “At this point, yeah, now it’s starting to affect me,” Hamlin said. “I’m worried a little bit more. It’s frustrating, because you want to do the best you can each week, and (crew chief) … Read entire article »

It’s time for struggling drivers to adjust their thinking

By Reid Spencer Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service Jeff Burton and Greg Biffle are in deep trouble. So are Jamie McMurray and Joey Logano. Burton and Biffle are Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup regulars. Neither McMurray nor Logano has ever qualified for the Chase. But all four drivers are in the same leaky boat, and it’s unlikely that any of the four will be around for NASCAR’s postseason this year — at least by traditional means. After disastrous starts to the 2011 season — compounded by pit-road mistakes in Sunday’s Kobalt Tools 400 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway — Burton and Biffle are tied for 31st in the Cup standings, 63 points behind leaders Tony Stewart and Kurt Busch. Under NASCAR’s new scoring system, that’s close to a race and a half out of first place. McMurray … Read entire article »
