Ford drivers ordered to work with only other Ford drivers at Talladega
By Reid Spencer Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service TALLADEGA, Ala.—Forget traditional drafting relationships. David Gilliland, for one, won’t be helping Tony Stewart, one of his past drafting partners. Basically, if a driver doesn’t bleed Ford blue, don’t expect him to get help from another of the blue oval drivers in Sunday’s Good Sam Club 500 at Talladega Superspeedway. Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup drivers Carl Edwards and Matt Kenseth—first and third in the series standings—are the focus of the … Read entire article »

Regan Smith pulls off upset at Darlington
By Reid Spencer Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service DARLINGTON, S.C.—Nearly three years after a NASCAR ruling denied him his first Sprint Cup victory, Regan Smith finally got the elusive win. After staying out on old tires, Smith held off Carl Edwards to win Saturday night’s Showtime Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway in a dramatic green-white-checkered-flag finish. Smith crossed the finish line 0.196 seconds ahead of runner-up Edwards. Moments later, tempers flared between drivers Kyle Busch and Kevin Harvick and their crews in the aftermath of a wild wreck that brought out the final caution of the race. “This is the Southern 500—we’re not supposed to win this thing,” an incredulous Smith radioed to his crew after the race. Brad Keselowski, also on old tires, finished third, with polesitter Kasey Kahne running fourth and Ryan Newman fifth. The … Read entire article »

NASCAR Notebook: Bayne decides to stick to Nationwide Series
Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service Even though NASCAR would have allowed Daytona 500 winner Trevor Bayne to change his eligibility for the championship from the Nationwide Series to the Sprint Cup Series, Bayne announced Tuesday he is sticking with his plans to run for the Nationwide title. As tempting as switching to Sprint Cup would have been—with NASCAR saying he would become eligible to run for rookie of the year and that his win at Daytona would count toward a possible wild-card entry into the Chase—Bayne showed he either is mature beyond his 20 years or has gotten some excellent advice—or both. Weighted most heavily in his decision is the plan to run a partial schedule on the Cup side—even with the Daytona 500 win. At this point, barring additional sponsorship, Bayne plans … Read entire article »

NASCAR Notebook: Bayne’s win is salve to Wood Brothers
By Reid Spencer Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.—The Wood Brothers had fallen on hard times. The most venerable race team still operating in the sport, Wood Brothers Racing hadn’t seen victory lane since Elliott Sadler beat John Andretti to the checkered flag at Bristol in March 2001. In recent years, the Woods have been more concerned with qualifying for races than with winning them. But in winning Sunday’s Daytona 500 in a car painted like the machine David Pearson raced in the team’s glory days, Trevor Bayne provided both a glimpse of the past and the window to a brighter future. “We struggled so much in the past couple years just to make the Daytona 500, much less win it,” an emotional Eddie Wood, team … Read entire article »
