Daytona 500 moves to Feb. 26 in 2012

By Reid Spencer Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.—The Daytona 500 is moving. In 2012 the NASCAR season opener will move to Feb. 26, a week later than it has been run in recent years. NASCAR will lose the March off-week that this year follows the third Sprint Cup race of the season, in Las Vegas. Steve O’Donnell, NASCAR’s senior vice president of racing operations, acknowledged the National Football League’s consideration of a longer season—one in which the Super Bowl might intrude on the traditional third-Sunday-in-February Daytona 500 date—played a role in the joint decision by the sanctioning body and Daytona International Speedway to compress the schedule. “We’re not going to deny the fact that part of this also is dealing with the NFL,” O’Donnell said Sunday. “Who knows where they’ll go with … Read entire article »

NASCAR Notebook: Bayne’s win is salve to Wood Brothers

By Reid Spencer Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.—The Wood Brothers had fallen on hard times. The most venerable race team still operating in the sport, Wood Brothers Racing hadn’t seen victory lane since Elliott Sadler beat John Andretti to the checkered flag at Bristol in March 2001. In recent years, the Woods have been more concerned with qualifying for races than with winning them. But in winning Sunday’s Daytona 500 in a car painted like the machine David Pearson raced in the team’s glory days, Trevor Bayne provided both a glimpse of the past and the window to a brighter future. “We struggled so much in the past couple years just to make the Daytona 500, much less win it,” an emotional Eddie Wood, team … Read entire article »

Trevor Bayne stands NASCAR world on end with Daytona 500 win

By Reid Spencer Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.—The planets aligned. Heck, the heavens stood still. And Trevor Bayne recaptured the magic of David Pearson in the Wood Brothers throwback No. 21 Ford, winning Sunday’s 53rd running of the Daytona 500. On the second attempt at a green-white-checkered-flag finish at Daytona International Speedway, Bayne crossed the finish line .118 seconds ahead of Carl Edwards, returning the Wood Brothers to victory lane for the first time since 2001. Bayne became the first driver to win the Daytona 500 in his first attempt since Lee Petty won the inaugural event in 1959. By winning in his second start in NASCAR’s Sprint Cup Series, Bayne tied Jamie McMurray for quickest victory at the start of a career. In a war of attrition that set track records … Read entire article »

Trevor Bayne Gets First Win In Record-Setting Daytona 500

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Trevor Bayne won the Daytona 500 on Sunday, a day that featured records for cautions and lead changes. Bayne, who turned 20 Saturday, led the final two laps of the race that was decided with a green-white-checkered-flag finish. Carl Edwards finished second, with David Gilliland, Bobby Labonte and Kurt Busch rounding out the top five. The victory was the first for the Wood Brothers since 2001 with Elliott Sadler. Bayne is the seventh driver to get his first Cup victory in the Daytona 500. The race went eight laps beyond the scheduled 200 laps because of crashes and needed two green-white-checkered-flag finishes before Bayne became the youngest winner of the 500. He led the field to the green flag on the final restart. Some of the Sprint Cup Series … Read entire article »

Winning another Daytona 500 ‘so important’ to Johnson

By Jim Pedley Special to the Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service The numbers on Jimmie Johnson’s Sprint Cup resume are as gaudy as one of Elvis’ Las Vegas era jump suits. For the most part, that is. There is one number that is downright drab. It’s the number of Daytona 500s Johnson has won. That number is one. In interviews leading up to Sunday’s 53rd running of NASCAR’s most important race, Johnson let everybody know he desperately wants to begin pumping that number up toward “King size.” As he was reminded that Richard Petty has seven Daytona 500 victories to go along with his seven series championships, Johnson nodded along. Also understood is that when detractors do go after the legacy of the great Dale Earnhardt, it is often on the basis that he won … Read entire article »

Dale Jarrett, Joe Gibbs Racing and Interstate Batteries Win Together, Celebrate Separately

Note: In honor of Interstates Batteries’ and Joe Gibbs Racing’s 20th anniversary together in NASCAR, a series of stories highlighting 20 big moments will be published throughout 2011. This is the second in the series. The story of Dale Jarrett’s historic victory in the 35th Daytona 500 has been told many times throughout the last two decades. The legendary Dale Earnhardt led 107 of 200 laps on Feb. 14, 1993, but he was passed by Jarrett’s No. 18 Interstate Batteries car on the last lap while Jarrett’s father, Ned, excitedly called the action during the live CBS broadcast. The “Dale and Dale Show,” as referred to by Ned Jarrett on the telecast, is still considered by many to be one of the best races in NASCAR history. Perhaps lesser known, and somewhat humorous, … Read entire article »
