Jeff Gordon has no problem with Patrick in Daytona 500
By Reid Spencer Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service If Danica Patrick chooses to make her Sprint Cup debut in NASCAR’s biggest race, Jeff Gordon, for one, won’t have a problem with it. In all likelihood—given her well-honed marketing instincts—Patrick will choose the 2012 Daytona 500 to launch her Cup career. Three of Patrick’s 20 Nationwide Series starts have come at Daytona. Bayne’s victory connects NASCAR’s past with its future
By Reid Spencer Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.—Pay attention. What you saw Sunday at Daytona International Speedway was a rare watershed moment, the completion of an unbroken circle, the connection of NASCAR’s past with its future. Some of the connections are obvious. Daytona 500 winner Trevor Bayne, barely 20 and in his own words, “just a kid,” drove the Wood Brothers’ No. 21 Ford to the win. The car’s paint scheme was the spitting image of the one that graced the No. 21 Mercury that David Pearson coaxed across the finish line after he and Richard Petty wrecked on the final lap of the 1976 Daytona 500. Before Bayne took the checkered flag and ended a 10-year drought for NASCAR’s oldest operating race team, Pearson had given the Wood Brothers their last … Read entire article »

Daytona 500 moves to Feb. 26 in 2012
By Reid Spencer Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.—The Daytona 500 is moving. In 2012 the NASCAR season opener will move to Feb. 26, a week later than it has been run in recent years. NASCAR will lose the March off-week that this year follows the third Sprint Cup race of the season, in Las Vegas. Steve O’Donnell, NASCAR’s senior vice president of racing operations, acknowledged the National Football League’s consideration of a longer season—one in which the Super Bowl might intrude on the traditional third-Sunday-in-February Daytona 500 date—played a role in the joint decision by the sanctioning body and Daytona International Speedway to compress the schedule. “We’re not going to deny the fact that part of this also is dealing with the NFL,” O’Donnell said Sunday. “Who knows where they’ll go with … Read entire article »

NASCAR Notebook: Bayne’s win is salve to Wood Brothers
By Reid Spencer Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.—The Wood Brothers had fallen on hard times. The most venerable race team still operating in the sport, Wood Brothers Racing hadn’t seen victory lane since Elliott Sadler beat John Andretti to the checkered flag at Bristol in March 2001. In recent years, the Woods have been more concerned with qualifying for races than with winning them. But in winning Sunday’s Daytona 500 in a car painted like the machine David Pearson raced in the team’s glory days, Trevor Bayne provided both a glimpse of the past and the window to a brighter future. “We struggled so much in the past couple years just to make the Daytona 500, much less win it,” an emotional Eddie Wood, team … Read entire article »

Trevor Bayne stands NASCAR world on end with Daytona 500 win
By Reid Spencer Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.—The planets aligned. Heck, the heavens stood still. And Trevor Bayne recaptured the magic of David Pearson in the Wood Brothers throwback No. 21 Ford, winning Sunday’s 53rd running of the Daytona 500. On the second attempt at a green-white-checkered-flag finish at Daytona International Speedway, Bayne crossed the finish line .118 seconds ahead of Carl Edwards, returning the Wood Brothers to victory lane for the first time since 2001. Bayne became the first driver to win the Daytona 500 in his first attempt since Lee Petty won the inaugural event in 1959. By winning in his second start in NASCAR’s Sprint Cup Series, Bayne tied Jamie McMurray for quickest victory at the start of a career. In a war of attrition that set track records … Read entire article »
