Gilliland Hopes to Repeat as Kentucky Cinderella

Statesville, N.C. – The last time David Gilliland raced at Kentucky Speedway, his day ended in Victory Lane. That was in 2006 in the NASCAR Nationwide Series, when he drove a part-time, unsponsored car to a surprising win against a field of Sprint Cup regulars.  Saturday’s Quaker State 400 will make for a long-awaited reunion between the 1.5-mile speedway and the driver of the No. 34 Taco Bell Ford in the Sprint Cup Series – and another opportunity to prevail as an underdog. … Read entire article »

Gilliland’s Dance Card Full for Daytona Return

Statesville, NC – David Gilliland should have no problem finding plenty of “dance partners” when he returns to the two-car draft at Daytona International Speedway this weekend. The driver of the No. 34 Taco Bell Ford gained plenty of respect among his competitors after his third-place finish in the season-opening Daytona 500 and a ninth-place finish at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway in April. After those two impressive superspeedway runs, Gilliland is ready for a third with Saturday night’s Coke Zero 400 at the storied 2.5-mile tri-oval in Daytona Beach, Fla. NASCAR ranks Gilliland second in the category of “closers” at Daytona. The statistical category tracks drivers over a six-year period to determine who gains the most positions in the final 10 percent of laps at a track. Gilliland … Read entire article »

Gilliland Has Winning Ways at Sonoma

Statesville, NC – David Gilliland has visited Victory Lane at Infineon Raceway in other series leading up to his Sprint Cup career. He’s come pretty close in a Cup ride, too. The 1.99-mile Sonoma, Calif., road course is the site of his best Cup career finish – second in 2008. The California native looks forward to returning to the track where he won races as his father’s (Butch Gilliland) crew chief and again later as a driver in the NASCAR K&N West Series. The No. 34 Taco Bell team is prepared to run up front in Sunday’s Toyota/Save Mart 350 after two days of productive testing at Virginia International Raceway (VIR) in recent weeks. … Read entire article »

Drivers team with Lionel to pay tribute to 10th anniversary of 9/11

CONCORD, N.C. – Lionel NASCAR Collectables, in partnership with the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation, on Thursday unveiled a multi-car, on-track program that pays tribute to the 10th anniversary of the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, and helps raise funds to build homes for the only three surviving quadruple amputees of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan — United States Army Spc. Brendan Marrocco, U.S. Marine Corps Cpl. Todd Nicely and U.S. Marine Corps Cpl. John Peck. As part of the “Honoring Our Heroes” program, Greg Biffle, David Gilliland, Jamie McMurray, Danica Patrick and Tony Stewart will drive special patriotic paint schemes that feature the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation logo during the September race weekend at Richmond. I think it’s important for NASCAR to do something as a sport … Read entire article »

Gilliland Warmed Up for the Long Run

Statesville, N.C.- David Gilliland and the No. 34 Taco Bell Ford team had a good run in the sprint. Now it’s time for the marathon. The team is using its notes from last weekend’s 40-lap Sprint Showdown to prepare for Sunday’s Coca-Cola 600 – the longest race on the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series schedule. Gilliland finished the Showdown seventh in a fast Taco Bell Ford, and will bring the same chassis back to Charlotte Motor Speedway for this weekend’s 600-mile event. Sunday’s Coca-Cola 600 will be Gilliland’s 10th start at the 1.5-mile oval in Concord, N.C. His best finish is 25th. Comments from Taco Bell team driver David Gilliland on the Coca-Cola 600: “The two biggest things about the 600 that make it challenging are the fact that it starts in … Read entire article »

Gilliland ‘In to Win’ for Showdown

Statesville, N.C. – David Gilliland looks forward to turning the clock backward, so to speak. The driver of the No. 34 Taco Bell Ford compares this weekend’s Sprint Showdown to old-fashioned Saturday night racing from his early racing days, where every car competed for the win and no one worried about points. Saturday night’s non-points, 40-lap shootout at Charlotte (N.C.) Motor Speedway will be reminiscent of those times, when Gilliland competes for one of the two finishing positions that will advance to the Sprint All-Star Race immediately following the Showdown. The race consists of two 20-lap segments, with a caution period in between to allow for pit stops. The first- and second-place finishers advance to the All-Star race, in addition to the top finisher in a fan vote. The … Read entire article »

Gilliland Learning to Love ‘Lady in Black’

Statesville, N.C. – As the No. 34 Taco Bell Ford team continues to push and progress, David Gilliland and his crew now face one of the biggest challenges on the Sprint Cup Series schedule: Darlington (S.C.) Raceway. The team is up to the task after a top-25 run last week at Richmond (Va.) International Raceway – a race in which Gilliland said they made great strides in their short-track program. Gilliland will have one of his biggest fans on the pit box for Saturday night’s Showtime Southern 500. His mother will come to Darlington, from his home state of California, for NASCAR’s annual Mother’s Day festivities at the 1.366-mile oval. She will accompany her son to driver introductions and will join other NASCAR moms in giving the … Read entire article »

For Gilliland, Top-10s Showcase Improved Performance at Front Row

Statesville, N.C. – Richmond (Va.) International Raceway won’t carry the speeds of Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway, but David Gilliland hopes to stay full throttle at this week’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series event after his second top-10 finish of the season.  Gilliland’s ninth-place run at Talladega on April 17 gives the driver of the No. 34 Ford more top-10s in 2011 than some of the series’ 2010 “Chase” contenders. The finishes are also the first two top-10 results for Front Row Motorsports. Gilliland looks to carry that momentum to Richmond with a familiar paint scheme on his car.  Gander Mountain returns for its second race of the season on the No. 34 Fusion.  The outdoor retailer partnered with the team earlier this month for the race … Read entire article »
