NASCAR Notebook: Raikkonen hot-foots out of NASCAR—for now
By Reid Spencer Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service CONCORD, N.C. — On the heels of a disappointing 27th-place finish in Saturday’s Top Gear 300 Nationwide Series race at Charlotte Motor Speedway, Kimi Raikkonen is returning to Europe with future NASCAR plans completely up in the air. Though Raikkonen’s test of Robby Gordon’s Sprint Cup car at Virginia International Raceway on Tuesday fueled speculation that the 2007 Formula One champion would make his Cup debut June 26 at Sonoma, Raikkonen said Saturday that his two appearances at Charlotte—the Nationwide race and the May 20 Camping World Truck Series event—are the only ones on the docket right now. “My plan was always to do these first two races, and then I have to go back to Europe and do some rallies and see what happens,” Raikkonen … Read entire article »

Harvick wins 600 when Earnhardt runs out of gas
CONCORD, N.C.—You didn’t have to open a Superman comic to find Bizarro World—Sunday’s Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway had all the strangeness a fan of cosmic weirdness could hope to find. Kevin Harvick, a driver who wasn’t a factor for 600 miles, won the race when Dale Earnhardt Jr. ran out of gas a half-mile from the finish line after the event went to overtime for the first time in its history. And despite the victory, Harvick still can’t stand racing at Charlotte. “Even though we won, I’m still miserable,” Harvick said after the race. “In about 30 minutes, I’ll be happy, when we drive out of that tunnel and leave the month of May behind.” Earnhardt ran out of gas in sight of the checkered flag, breaking the hearts of fans who … Read entire article »

Matt Kenseth powers past Edwards for Nationwide win at Charlotte
By Reid Spencer Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service CONCORD, N.C. — In his first Nationwide Series start of the season — and his first ever in the current-generation racecar — Matt Kenseth out-dueled Roush Fenway Racing teammate Carl Edwards to win Saturday’s Top Gear 300 race at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Subbing for sidelined Trevor Bayne, Kenseth won the 26th Nationwide race of his career. Edwards ran second, followed by Kyle Busch, polesitter Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and Reed Sorenson. Brad Keselowski, Steve Wallace, Brian Scott, Aric Almirola and Elliott Sadler completed the top 10. In his Nationwide debut, Kimi Raikkonen fought the handling of his No. 87 Toyota before a pit-road speeding penalty and damage to the front splitter relegated him to a 27th-place finish. “It feels really good to beat Carl,” Kenseth said. “He’s one … Read entire article »

Kenseth Wins as ‘Fastenal Fast Fleet’ Dominates Charlotte Nationwide Race
CONCORD, N.C. – Roush Fenway Racing continued its NASCAR domination, with the ‘Fastenal Fast Fleet’ posting a one-two finish and placing three cars inside the top four of Saturday’s Top Gear 300 at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Matt Kenseth – filling in for Trevor Bayne – and Carl Edwards battled for much of the race, with Kenseth making the final pass for the victory with just three laps to go. Ricky Stenhouse Jr. backed up last week’s win at Iowa Speedway, with a pole and a fourth-place finish, and moved to within one point of the Nationwide Series point lead. “What a great day for Fastenal and Ford Mustang,” said Kenseth in victory lane. “It was intense there. I cleared Carl the one time and he passed me right back. We had new … Read entire article »

Stars are aligned for Edwards to shine in 600
By Jim Pedley Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service Carl Edwards has not had a wonderful working relationship with Charlotte Motor Speedway over the years. Not according to Edwards himself, at least. He actually maintains that he has stunk there. But there are signs Edwards may soon have to adjust the way he describes his relationship with the speedway. Signs so encouraging that few would be surprised if he wins Sunday night’s Coca-Cola 600. And Edwards might be one of them: “I think that we figured some things out,” he said last week about CMS. Though Edwards, a veteran of 240 Cup starts, has won 19 times in the series, he has yet to win a points race at Charlotte. And though he has come close—twice he has finished third—he insists, “We really have struggled at this … Read entire article »
