48 team swipes momentum from Hamlin
By Reid Spencer Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service Just when you thought they were down and out … Jimmie Johnson and his indestructible No. 48 team clawed their way back into the Sprint Cup championship conversation. They did it with an all-or-nothing gamble, but a gamble where the risk was carefully calculated. And they took advantage of Denny Hamlin’s No. 11 team, which was asleep at the switch in its failure to anticipate that others might be able to stretch their fuel to the end of Sunday’s Kobalt Tools 500 at Phoenix International Raceway. Johnson’s fifth-place finish at Phoenix may prove as significant and decisive as any of his 19 victories in previous Chase races. The fifth-place run allowed Johnson to trim a 33-point deficit to Hamlin entering the Phoenix race to 15 points entering … Read entire article »

Ford lays down gauntlet to 48 team
By Reid Spencer Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service Mike Ford isn’t just tugging on Superman’s cape—he’s trying to shred it. Johnson’s pit crew, which was benched because of poor performance in favor of Gordon’s crew after Gordon was knocked out of the AAA Texas 500 on Sunday, will serve as Gordon’s pit crew for the final two NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races—at Phoenix and Homestead. Johnson, the four-time defending Cup champion, fell from the top spot in the standings and now trails Denny Hamlin by 33 points following Hamlin’s win at Texas Motor Speedway. Johnson placed ninth in the event. Running in the top five, Johnson lost several positions during an early stop when the crew had trouble with the right-front tire and, as a result, Johnson returned to the … Read entire article »
