NASCAR plans to take 48 car to tech center for rest of season

By Reid Spencer Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service MARTINSVILLE, Va.—The NASCAR research-and-development center in Concord, N.C., will have a regular customer for the rest of the season—and a familiar one. There’s a high likelihood NASCAR will take the No. 48 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet driven by Jimmie Johnson to its tech center after each of the remaining four races this season. NASCAR’s move is a reaction to crew chief Chad Knaus’ instructions before last Sunday’s Sprint Cup race at … Read entire article »

Despite testy exchange, it’s business as usual for Johnson, Knaus

By Reid Spencer Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service DOVER, Del.—Despite a testy exchange on the radio last week at New Hampshire, it’s business as usual for Jimmie Johnson and Chad Knaus—to the extent that the five-time Sprint Cup champion and his crew chief haven’t even talked about the incident. During last Sunday’s Sylvania 300, in which Johnson finished 18th and fell to 10th in the standings, 29 points behind Chase leader Tony Stewart, the driver of the No. … Read entire article »

Jimmie Johnson characterizes run-in with Kyle Busch as hard racing

Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service LOUDON, N.H.—Five-time defending Sprint Cup champion Jimmie Johnson really didn’t take umbrage when Kyle Busch crowded him with 21 laps left in Sunday’s Sylvania 300 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. After all, both drivers are in the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup and are expected to contest positions. Johnson, however, lost three spots after contact between his No. 48 Chevrolet and Busch’s No. 18 Toyota. He finished 18th and dropped to 10th … Read entire article »

NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Champion’s Week – Day 1

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.- Winning is never, ever mundane. Apparently, neither is a day-long media tour — not when it involves a five-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion who doubles as a new father. Jimmie Johnson, winner of five consecutive championships and guest of honor during this week’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Champion’s Week in Las Vegas, hit a number of local media outlets today. And all the while, he carried around a prop — his infant daughter Genevieve’s car seat. He needed it for the eventual arrival of his five-month old baby and wife, Chandra. The daughter; the car seat; the new responsibilities. They’re just a few of the many new wrinkles to a week that has become ritual for Johnson. “I am trying to be much more responsible since I have the baby,” … Read entire article »

48 team swipes momentum from Hamlin

By Reid Spencer Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service Just when you thought they were down and out … Jimmie Johnson and his indestructible No. 48 team clawed their way back into the Sprint Cup championship conversation. They did it with an all-or-nothing gamble, but a gamble where the risk was carefully calculated. And they took advantage of Denny Hamlin’s No. 11 team, which was asleep at the switch in its failure to anticipate that others might be able to stretch their fuel to the end of Sunday’s Kobalt Tools 500 at Phoenix International Raceway. Johnson’s fifth-place finish at Phoenix may prove as significant and decisive as any of his 19 victories in previous Chase races. The fifth-place run allowed Johnson to trim a 33-point deficit to Hamlin entering the Phoenix race to 15 points entering … Read entire article »

Ford lays down gauntlet to 48 team

By Reid Spencer Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service Mike Ford isn’t just tugging on Superman’s cape—he’s trying to shred it. On Sunday evening, after Denny Hamlin won the AAA Texas 500, the rest of the world found out what the NASCAR Sprint Cup garage already knew: Hamlin’s crew chief is intensely competitive and fiercely proud of the team he has assembled for this year’s championship run. And while Hamlin was tactfully downplaying the mistakes—make that collapse—of Jimmie Johnson’s pit crew, Ford wasn’t mincing words when he described the scenario that allowed Hamlin to turn a 14-point deficit to Johnson into a 33-point advantage with two races left in the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup. “I think our race team is better than their race team, and I’m not going to tiptoe around them because … Read entire article »

Gordon’s pit crew replaces Johnson’s for final two races

Jeff Gordon’s pit crew will serve as the pit crew for Jimmie Johnson for the remainder of the season, Hendrick Motorsports announced Monday. Johnson’s pit crew, which was benched because of poor performance in favor of Gordon’s crew after Gordon was knocked out of the AAA Texas 500 on Sunday, will serve as Gordon’s pit crew for the final two NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races—at Phoenix and Homestead. Johnson, the four-time defending Cup champion, fell from the top spot in the standings and now trails Denny Hamlin by 33 points following Hamlin’s win at Texas Motor Speedway. Johnson placed ninth in the event. Running in the top five, Johnson lost several positions during an early stop when the crew had trouble with the right-front tire and, as a result, Johnson returned to the … Read entire article »
