SMI chairman Bruton Smith hopes track grinding will transform Bristol
By Reid Spencer, NASCAR Wire Service – As promised, Bristol Motor Speedway is getting a facelift — or perhaps more accurately, a close shave — in hopes of persuading fans to return to the 160,000-seat, .533-mile Taj Mahal of short track racing. Bruton Smith, chairman of Speedway Motorsports Inc., the parent company that owns Bristol and seven other Sprint Cup racetracks, announced Wednesday at the speedway that, by the time the Cup series returns for the Aug. 25 Irwin Tools Night Race, the variable banking incorporated during a 2007 resurfacing of the track will be gone. A half-empty grandstand greeted the Cup series for the fourth race of the season in March, prompting Smith announce immediately that he would make changes to the track based on feedback from fans. The 2007 project created … Read entire article »

Cool-Down Lap: Bristol faces challenge in rebuilding its fan base
By Reid Spencer, NASCAR Wire Service On Friday afternoon, track owner Bruton Smith promised that Sunday’s Food City 500 Sprint Cup race at Bristol Motor Speedway would draw a large crowd. Not a sellout, mind you, but a large crowd. It was a large crowd, but not for Bristol. In the box score distributed after the event, attendance was listed at 102,000. That’s an estimate — not turnstile count — and a cosmetic estimate at that. Most of us … Read entire article »

By Reid Spencer NASCAR Wire Service BRISTOL, Tenn. – Elliott Sadler wasn’t sure about the decisive call in Saturday’s Ford EcoBoost 300 at Bristol Motor Speedway — until crew chief Luke Lambert gave him a history lesson. Lambert’s astute call to keep Sadler on the racetrack under the final caution gave Elliott Sadler the boost he needed to win his second Nationwide Series race of the season, two weeks after he broke a 14-year drought in the series … Read entire article »

Kyle Busch aims to rebound, bolster Bristol results
NASCAR Wire Service The high potential for pitfalls may not make Bristol Motor Speedway a welcome sight for everyone. But not everyone has navigated past peril there quite as well as Kyle Busch. Over the past three years, no NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver has been as dominant as Busch at the high-speed .533-mile track. He enters Sunday’s Food City 500 having won four of the last six races at Bristol and is tied for most victories … Read entire article »
