France: NASCAR won’t define standards for driver behavior
By Reid Spencer Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service CONCORD, N.C.—Despite calls from several NASCAR drivers to define consequences for actions on and off the racetrack, NASCAR chairman and CEO Brian France said the sanctioning body would continue to maintain a degree of subjectivity in the application of its rules. Questions arose as to NASCAR’s enforcement policies following incidents at Richmond involving Juan Pablo Montoya and Ryan Newman and at Darlington with Kevin Harvick and Kyle Busch, who escalated a wreck at the end of the Showtime Southern 500 into a confrontation on pit road. Harvick got out of his car and tried to punch Busch through the window of his car. Busch in turn shoved Harvick’s unattended car out of the way and into the pit road wall. A Q&A with NASCAR CEO, Brian France
THE MODERATOR: Good morning, everyone. We’re joined by NASCAR chairman and CEO Brian France. He will give a few opening comments and we’ll go into our normal Q&A session. BRIAN FRANCE: Good morning, everyone. One way or the other this weekend we’re going to make a little bit of history or a lot of history depending on how it goes. Jimmie Johnson could make history with his fourth consecutive championship, quite an accomplishment. We could make history if Jimmie has a problem and Mark Martin wins, he would be the oldest champion in NASCAR history to win a title. We could make history either way if Rick Hendrick, and he will, wins his ninth championship and ties Richard Petty.
