Busch Dominates, but Settles for Solid Third-Place Finish at Fontana

Kyle Busch dominated Sunday’s Auto Club 400 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, Calif., leading five times for a race-high 151 laps. But despite the strong effort, the driver of the No. 18 Interstate Batteries Toyota for Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR) couldn’t hold off the hard charges of Jimmie Johnson and Kevin Harvick in a nine-lap shootout to the finish, and he wound up third. “We had such a great Interstate Batteries Camry today,” said Busch, who now has nine top-10 finishes in 14 career Sprint Cup starts at Fontana. “We seemed to lose the handle a little bit two runs from the end and, especially with that last set of tires, we just didn’t quite have what it took in order to keep the front … Read entire article »

Dissapointing Finish for Busch Brothers

By Reid Spencer Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service FONTANA, Calif.—After leading a race-high 151 laps, Kyle Busch finished a disappointing third in Sunday’s Auto Club 400 Sprint Cup race at Auto Club Speedway—but it wasn’t for a lack of trying. Under the final caution of the race, Busch stayed out on old tires, as did race winner Kevin Harvick and runner-up Jimmie Johnson. Busch lost the lead to Johnson on Lap 198 of 200 and fell to third when Harvick surged past both drivers for the win. “Just real, real unfortunate and frustrating and disappointing all in one that we weren’t able to seal the deal today,” Busch said. “Just came down to the last few laps there with Jimmie first, and then Kevin got into it, too, with us. “You ask a little bit … Read entire article »

Last-lap pass gives Harvick win at Fontana

By Reid Spencer Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service FONTANA, Calif.—With a last-lap pass of Jimmie Johnson, Kevin Harvick won Sunday’s Auto Club 400 Sprint Cup race at Auto Club Speedway. Harvick, who restarted fifth with nine laps remaining, surged to the front on the final two laps, passing Kyle Busch and Johnson in the process. The victory was Harvick’s first of the season and the 15th of his career. Johnson ran second, followed by Busch, Matt Kenseth and Ryan Newman. Carl Edwards, Clint Bowyer, Brian Vickers, Kasey Kahne and polesitter Juan Pablo Montoya completed the top 10. A caution on Lap 185, after Bobby Labonte blew a right front tire and slammed the Turn 4 wall, meant decision time for the crew chiefs. With Labonte’s wrecked car blocking the entrance to pit … Read entire article »

Kyle Busch steals a win at Fontana

By Reid Spencer Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service FONTANA, Calif.—Kyle Busch drove it like he stole it over the final 13 Laps at Auto Club Speedway, because that’s exactly what happened in Saturday’s Royal Purple 300 Nationwide Series race. About the only thing he didn’t get was a grand larceny charge. Thanks to a two-tire call with 13 laps left, Busch exited the pits with a five-second lead over runner-up Carl Edwards and won a race in a No. 18 Toyota that was, at best, a third-place car. Busch’s victory kept a litany of streaks intact. Busch won his third straight event in NASCAR’s top two national series, his third straight Nationwide Series race at Auto Club Speedway and the seventh straight Nationwide race at the 2-mile track for Joe Gibbs Racing, … Read entire article »

Montoya snares pole at Fontana

By Reid Spencer Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service FONTANA, Calif.—Juan Pablo Montoya found a quick cure for his qualifying woes Friday at Auto Club Speedway. Montoya improved dramatically on his 23.5 average starting position this season in winning the Coors Light pole award for Sunday’s Auto Club 400 Sprint Cup race at the 2-mile track. Turning a lap in 38.992 seconds (184.653 mph), Montoya was the only driver to break 39 seconds in time trials for the fifth race of the season. Denny Hamlin claimed the second starting spot with a lap at 184.270 mph. Joey Logano (184.134) put his No. 20 Toyota in the third spot on the grid, and Regan Smith (184.030) improved his series-best qualifying average to 5.8 with a fourth-place effort. Tony Stewart and David Ragan will start … Read entire article »

NASCAR Notebook: Edwards still owes payback to Kyle Busch

By Reid Spencer Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service FONTANA, Calif.—The talk started at Phoenix last month, after Kyle Busch held off Carl Edwards to win the Nationwide Series race there. Edwards raced Busch cleanly during the closing laps, resisting the impulse to bump him out of the way. After the race, both drivers made reference to Edwards owing Busch a shot for a previous incident. In last Sunday’s Sprint Cup race at Bristol, Edwards had another chance to use his bumper but again refrained from doing so. Busch won the race, with Edwards finishing second. Afterward, however, both drivers mentioned Busch still might have payback coming his way. There’s history between the drivers that predates an incident in February’s Cup race at Phoenix, where Busch bounced off the curbing in Turn 3 and knocked Edwards’ … Read entire article »

Cobb focused on business, can’t wait for Bristol drama to subside

By Lee Montgomery Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service Jennifer Jo Cobb lost her Nationwide Series ride moments before last weekend’s race at Bristol Motor Speedway. But in the days since, she’s been overwhelmed with encouragement and support and has turned something negative into something positive. The biggest Nationwide story out of Bristol last weekend wasn’t Kyle Busch’s victory. It was the brouhaha between Cobb and her former car owner, Rick Russell, over Cobb’s refusal to start-and-park the 2nd Chance Motorsports Ford. Accusations flew back and forth—and continue to—but Cobb has come out smelling like a rose. For starters, Rick Ware Racing hired her to run the team’s No. 41 in this weekend’s race at Auto Club Speedway. “I’ve got a ride for California, my T-shirt sales have quadrupled this week, I’ve got … Read entire article »
