Johnny Benson Suffers Punctured Lung, Bruised Ribs and Broken Wrist after Saturday Night Wreck

Berlin, Michigan – Defending NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Champion Johnny Benson is in a Grand Rapids, Michigan hospital in stable condition after being involved in a wreck at Berlin Raceway in nearby Berlin, Michigan.
Until last Monday, Benson drove for Red Horse Racing but lost his seat when the team was unable to secure sponsorship for his truck. Instead of racing at Michigan International with the trucks, Benson returned to his home track at Berlin and raced his Supermodified.

Benson, who was making the first of two local appearances on the ISMA circuit, had just come around Turn 3 on the first lap of the race when he made contact with Larry Lehnert.

The wing of Lehnert’s supermodified car was knocked sideways and Benson actually was airborne for a few seconds before making contact with the track.

A yellow fire engulfed the main cab portion of the vehicle. Track personnel quickly extinguished the blaze and pulled Benson from the vehicle.

The accident was caught on video and below is the WOOD-TV Grand Rapids report.
