Fox would like to put some Cup races on Speed

By Tripp Mickle and John Ourand | Special to the Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service Fox has held informal discussions with NASCAR about a new TV rights agreement that would allow the network to put some of its Sprint Cup races on Speed. David Hill, Fox Sports chairman, said Fox would like to see some of the 13 regular-season races it televises on Speed. A Fox source said the company could ask for as many as six races for the network. Fox is five years into an eight-year, $1.76 billion contract with NASCAR that mandates Fox televise all of its Sprint Cup races on its broadcast channel except for two non-points, specialty events — the Sprint All-Star Race and the Gatorade Duel from Daytona, which air on Speed. NASCAR Notebook: How will NASCAR handle Gibbs’ oil pan infractions?

By Reid Spencer Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service BROOKLYN, Mich.—Will Joe Gibbs Racing get its second straight points penalty, or will NASCAR issue a slap on the wrist for the unapproved oil pans found on all three Gibbs Sprint Cup cars during opening-day inspection Friday at Michigan International Speedway? On Monday, NASCAR docked Kyle Busch and Joe Gibbs each six driver and owner points, respectively, and fined crew chief Dave Rogers $25,000 when Busch’s third-place car measured too low in the left front during postrace inspection last Sunday at Pocono. On Friday, Cup series director John Darby told the Gibbs teams, which had not submitted the oil pans for approval before mounting them on their engines, to replace the offending oil pans with approved parts before Friday’s first practice. The teams complied, and the unapproved … Read entire article »

NASCAR Notebook: Michigan announces repaving project

By Reid Spencer Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service BROOKLYN, Mich.—When NASCAR comes to Michigan International Speedway next year, the track will sport a completely repaved racing surface, if the project announced Friday goes according to plan. Michigan will begin the fourth repaving in the history of the two-mile track with the resurfacing of pit road immediately after Sunday’s Sprint Cup Series race. The project does not include any reconfiguring of the racetrack, speedway officials said. Repaving of the racing surface itself will begin after the Aug. 21 Sprint Cup race. The project is scheduled for completion before the NASCAR’s top three divisions return to Michigan next year. Most drivers were wary about the repaving, because most think the nature of racing is likely to change. Michigan is known for its wide racing surface and use … Read entire article »

Mobil 1 Car Swap at Watkins Glen Press Conference

An interview with TONY STEWART and LEWIS HAMILTON THE MODERATOR: Ladies and gentlemen, it’s time to get the drivers up here and take a few questions, explain whether that was as much fun as it looked. Before we throw it open to the floor, I’ll get a few questions going here. Lewis, tell us your experience for the first time in a stock car. LEWIS HAMILTON: Well, it was definitely good that I got to go out in the F1 car just to kind of get an idea of where the track went. The track is absolutely fantastic. It feels like a real classic. It just feels historic when you’re driving around. They don’t make tracks like that nowadays. When they build new Formula One circuits, they don’t build them like this. Being in a … Read entire article »

Ride swap gives Hamilton, Stewart a welcome break

By Reid Spencer Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service WATKINS GLEN, N.Y.—Lewis Hamilton and Tony Stewart got a welcome respite from the serious business of auto racing by doing what they love—minus the pressure they feel on the weekends. Hamilton, the 2008 Formula One champion, and Stewart, twice a NASCAR Sprint Cup champion, each got a taste of the other’s milieu Tuesday at Watkins Glen International. After Hamilton completed five laps in a Stewart-Haas Cup car, Stewart took a turn in the McLaren Mercedes MP4-23 Hamilton drove to the 2008 world championship. It was a rainy, blustery day at the Glen. The track was wet when Stewart and Hamilton ran some baseline laps in their own cars—both on rain tires—but by the time Hamilton began his run in the stock car, the track had begun … Read entire article »
