NASCAR Notebook: Stewart promises swift, irreparable damage to blockers

By Reid Spencer Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.—In football, blocking is an important fundamental. In racing, Tony Stewart thinks the practice is just fundamentally wrong—and he’s prepared to say so with his bumper. Stewart believed Brian Vickers was blocking him last Sunday at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, Calif. To show his displeasure, Stewart sent Vickers spinning in Turn 11 and ignited a seven-car wreck. Later in the race, Vickers retaliated by knocking Stewart on top of the tire barrier in the same corner. Stewart finished 39th and dropped to 12th in the Sprint Cup standings, but that won’t deter him from taking action against blockers in the future. … Read entire article »

Daytona launches smartphone app

By Tripp Mickle Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service Daytona International Speedway executives know that navigating their massive 480-acre motorsports park can be a challenge, so they’re launching a smartphone application to help fans find everything from restrooms to concession stands. The iPhone and Android app will be beta-tested during this weekend’s Coke Zero 400. Fans who sign up for the app on the speedway’s website or Facebook page will be able to download and test it. The track is the first owned by International Speedway Corp. to create an app. If the test goes well, the company’s technology division plans to develop similar apps for the company’s 11 other tracks that host Sprint Cup races. … Read entire article »

Roush Fenway Racing Statement on Crown Royal Leaving NASCAR

CONCORD, N.C.– Roush Fenway Racing has been informed that Crown Royal will not return as the primary sponsor of Matt Kenseth and the No. 17 NASCAR Sprint Cup team for the 2012 season. “We are obviously disappointed with the news, but first we would like to thank Diageo and Crown Royal for a terrific partnership that has spanned almost a decade,” said Roush Fenway president Steve Newmark. “They have been a first-class partner all the way around. France says Moving races from Fox to Speed Not a Done Deal

Logano surprised to win pole at Infineon

By Reid Spencer Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service SONOMA, Calif.—Negotiating the right- and left-hand turns at Infineon Raceway like a veteran road-course racer, Joey Logano won the pole for Sunday’s Toyota/Save Mart 350 NASCAR Sprint Cup race. “I never looked at myself as a road-course racer,” said Logano, who added that he found speed in his car after some post-practice adjustments improved the handling substantially. The Coors Light Pole Award was the second for Logano, who posted a lap at 93.256 miles per hour and watched as the 12 drivers who followed him in Friday’s time trials failed to run faster. Dover moving its 2012 spring date back to June

By Special to the Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service Dover International Speedway, which has had soft attendance at its May NASCAR races the last two years, will return to its more traditional June weekend in 2012. The track announced Wednesday that it will have its spring NASCAR weekend June 1-3 in 2012—the weekend following Memorial Day. The spring weekend will be a tripleheader with the NASCAR truck, Nationwide and Cup series all competing.
