Marcos Ambrose will start his first Daytona 500 from 23rd position after a solid first race of the season in the Gatorade Duels at Daytona International Speedway in Florida today. DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Matt Kenseth started 11th and drafted all the way to third position in Thursday’s first session of the Gatorade Duels, at Daytona International Speedway, but it would be all for not as he and his No. 17 DEWALT Ford Fusion were involved in an accident with only eight laps remaining in the qualifying race. As a result, Kenseth finished the race 26th, but more importantly the team will have to start Sunday’s Great American Race in a back-up car. Terry Labonte and the No. 66 Window World Toyota, fielded by Prism Motorsports, finished 19th in the first Gatorade Duel 150 qualifying race Thursday afternoon at the Daytona International Speedway. With the race determining the starting lineup for Sunday’s Daytona 500, Labonte and the Prism Motorsports team were already locked into the field. As part of the ongoing quest to set the field for the Daytona 500, the teams competed today in the duel Gatorade 150s. These races set spots 3 through 43 of the starting grid for Sunday’s upcoming race. The pole and outside pole positions were determined last Sunday during qualifying with Martin Truex winning the pole and Mark Martin earning the outside pole. Sunday’s qualifying also ensured that Bill Elliott, Travis Kvapil, Tony Stewart and Terry Labonte, 4 of the 21 teams outside the top 35 trying to make the race, would be in. That meant 17 teams were trying to the make the final four spots for the Daytona 500. Kyle Busch led the final five laps of his Gatorade Duel qualifying race to score his first win of 2009 and his third NASCAR victory at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway. |
